"Over the years, housing costs have risen, but wages have pretty much remained stagnant," executive director Deborah McKetty says. "We're seeing people who are working every day and doing all the right things ... being priced out of the housing market."
The Greenville Housing Fund offers several programs to help qualified people become homeowners.
A few of the specific programs include:
• Down payment assistance program for teachers
• Employee assistance housing initiative (a partnership with the Greenville Hospital System)
The criteria varies depending on the program, but in general, you must be a first-time homebuyer or not have owned a house for three years. It also depends on income and household size.
And because it's a nonprofit organization, they have a little more leeway with their programs.
"We don't have to take a federal program and try to make it a cookie cutter fit here versus being more responsive to the local housing need and having the flexibility to address solutions to meet those needs," McKetty says.
